How do I submit my preliminary application to the BHA?

  • When the waiting list is open, you can submit your preliminary application only by mail (US Postal Service), Fed-Ex or UPS. When we receive your completed, and signed, preliminary application form, we will add your name to the waiting list and send you a confirmation letter within 90 days from the date of your application. Keep a copy of of your completed application. Submitted preliminary applications that are not completely filled-out and signed will not be accepted, nor will the applicant be placed on the waiting list.

What is the Low-Income Public Housing Program?

  • The BHA’s low-income public housing program consists of 74 units of housing in Studio, and 1-4 bedroom apartments, located on 2 sites. Each household pays a minimum of 30% of the household income.

What is the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8)?

  • The BHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program provides a monthly rental subsidy that allows participants to rent privately owned units. A voucher holder can rent a unit from any owner (except relatives) that is willing to participate in the program. This is different from the BHA’s Low-Income Public Housing Program, in which tenants are assigned to units owned by the BHA.

Can I Apply For Both Programs?

  • There is only ONE (1) Waiting List. When you make application, you automatically apply for both programs. When your name comes to the top of the BHA waiting list you will be offered assistance from whichever program has an opening. You can not apply for just 1 program.

How Long Will I Be On the Waiting List?

  • You will be on the BHA Waiting List anywhere from 5 days to 5 years. The BHA Waiting List is organized by a preference point system. The applicant with the most points is served first. Any applicant’s number of points may change at any time, depending on the applicant’s circumstances. Therefore, you could be at the bottom of the waiting list today, then change your circumstances and be at the top of the waiting list. THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE OR EMERGENCY HOUSING ASSISTANCE FOR ANYONE.

May I Choose Where I Want To Live?

  • In the Low-Income Public Housing Program you are offered a unit that fits the size of your household, wherever that unit happens to be. In the Housing Choice Voucher you find your own apartment, in the Town of Boonton only.

Is There Elderly Housing?

  • The BHA does not have designated elderly housing. Elderly applicants are placed in apartments that meet their needs.

How do I change my address with the BHA?

  • To submit a change of address, you must put the change in writing, including your full name and the old address, and send it to the BHA by mail (US Postal Service). You cannot call in your address change, nor can you drop off your change of address.

How do I add or remove someone from my application?

  • You may add or remove people from your preliminary application by submitting the change to the BHA through the mail (US Postal Service).

Can the BHA deny assistance?

  • Yes. Even if you can prove that you need housing. The BHA is required by law and regulation to refuse assistance if you do not qualify. The BHA can also deny assistance to you if you do not meet the BHA guidelines for assistance.

Does the BHA verify personal information?

  • Yes. At various stages of the application process, the BHA may verify or ask you to verify any of the following for yourself and any or all of your household members: citizenship, immigration status, credit history, residential history, criminal history, professional or personal references, employment history, bank deposits for the past 12 months, child guardianship, enrollment in school, etc.

How do I cancel my application?

  • You may cancel your application at any time by writing to the BHA. When canceling your application, please include your name, Social Security number, and your address.
